Getting Started


You can also learn how to use proteinInsight in the tutorial pane.

Using Protein Insight is very easy. You can learn how to use Protein Insight with following texts. If you want to know system requirement or download Protein Insight, refer to System requirement and Downloads page.

PDB Open

In File menu, click "Open..." or "Open PDBID...".
If you want to additional PDB(s), click "Add..." or "Add PDBID..."

Manipulating selected PDB
  • Left mouse button and drag : Rotate selected PDB. If you select a VP, the center of rotation is center of VP. If you select none, the center of rotation is center of PDB.
  • Right mouse button and drag: Translate selected PDB.
  • Shift + Right mouse button and drag up and down: Forward and backward selected PDB, that is, translation in z-axis. The camera doesn't move.
  • If you load two PDBs, each PDB is manipulated separately. You can change each PDB in list box in the toolbar or F6 key

Manipulating camera
  • Ctrl + Left mouse button and drag : Rotate camera, Center of rotation is (0,0,0). The loaded PDB doesn't move.
  • Mouse wheel forward: Move camera forward
  • Mouse wheel backward: Move camera backward
  • Ctrl + Mouse Wheel: Faster move camera forward or backward
  • Shift + Mouse Wheel: Slower move camera forward or backward

Manipulating light source
  • Shift + Left mouse button down on light source and drag : Rotate light source

Manipulating Clip plane
  • Shift + Left mouse button down on clip plane and drag : Rotate Clip Plane
  • Shift + Right mouse button down on clip plane and drag : Translate Clip Plane

Select Atom, Residue, Chain, Model, PDB
  • Click a atom on the screen: select atom
  • Double-Click the atom on the screen : move camera to selected atom
  • Shift + Click atom on the screen: select residue which include atom
  • Ctrl + Click atom on the screen : add selected atom
  • Ctrl Shift Click atom on the screen : add selected residue
  • In the residues pane, you can select atom, residue, chain, model, PDB
  • in the PDB tree pane, you can select atom, residue, chain, model, PDB

Some useful hotkeys
  • F5 : Select Next VP in the VP list.
  • F6 : If you loaded two or more PDBs, select next PDB.

Select, Store and Visualization mechanism

After you selected what you want like atom(s), residue(s) and so on, click visualizaton method in the toolbar.

Then, your selected components is stored in the visualization List(VP List) pane and shows on the screen.

Change visualzation properties

You can change visualization properties such as shading model, geometry quality, surface generation algorithm in the properties pane.
If you select any VP in the VP list pane, the properties pane shows many visualization options corresponding VP.
If you select none in the VP list pane, the properties pane shows global graphics options such as background color, light option, ambient occlusion option.
